Link text tips

Keep it short. "Registry" is better than "Our Wedding Registry at Target".

Be clear. Guests should know what they'll find when they click.

Match your style. Use the same capitalization as your other menu items.

Common link text examples:
- Registry
- Photos
- Instagram
- Hotels
- Directions
- Livestream
- FAQ

Link URL requirements

Use the full URL. Include https:// at the beginning.

Test it. Make sure the link actually works before adding it.

Use short URLs if possible. Long URLs work but aren't pretty.

Examples:

Displaying the link in your menu

After adding the link, it won't show in your menu until you:

  1. Check the checkbox next to the link in the External links section
  2. Click Save changes

This lets you add links but control which ones are actually visible!

Editing custom links

To change a link:

  1. Go to Site settingsMenu tab
  2. Find your link in the External links section
  3. Click Edit
  4. Update the Link text or Link URL

  4. Look for a delete or remove option (usually appears when editing)
  5. Confirm deletion
  6. Click Save changes

Reordering custom links

You can change the order of your custom links:

  1. In the External links section, each link has a handle icon (horizontal lines)
  2. Click and drag the handle to reorder
  3. Drop the link in the desired position
  4. The order in the table is the order in your menu
  5. Click Save changes

This lets you control where custom links appear relative to each other!

Custom links vs. page links

Page links: Navigate to pages on your wedding website.

Custom links: Navigate to external websites.

Both appear in your navigation menu together! You can control which pages and which custom links show in your menu.

Opening links in new tabs

Custom links typically open in a new browser tab so guests don't lose their place on your wedding website. This is usually automatic!

Common uses for custom links

Registry links. Direct link to Amazon, Target, Zola, etc.

Hotel booking. Link to your hotel block or booking page.

Instagram. Share your wedding hashtag or Instagram account.

Travel info. Link to a Google Doc or external page with travel details.

Google Forms. Song requests, dietary restrictions, or other surveys.

Livestream. If you're using a streaming service not built into WedSites.

Photo sharing. Link to a shared album or photo upload form.

RSVP alternatives. If you're using an external RSVP system.

Multiple custom links

You can add as many custom links as you want! Just keep in mind:

Too many links can overwhelm guests. Stick to the most important ones.

Mobile menus get crowded. Test on mobile to make sure it looks good.

Consider organization. Group related links together by ordering them next to each other.

Link text character limits

Keep your link text reasonably short. Most themes display menu items on a single line, so:

1-2 words is ideal. "Registry", "Hotels", "Photos"

3-4 words maximum. "Book Your Hotel", "Upload Your Photos"

Longer text might wrap or get cut off on mobile.

Testing your links

After adding custom links:

  1. Visit your live wedding website
  2. Click on each custom link
  3. Make sure it goes to the right place
  4. Check on mobile too!

Broken links are frustrating for guests, so test before sharing your site!

Styling and appearance

Custom links appear in your navigation menu styled the same as your page links. The exact appearance depends on your theme, but they'll match your site's design automatically!

Custom links are perfect for extending your wedding website beyond just the pages you create, connecting guests to everything they need!
