Generating automatic seating

Learn how to use automatic seating to distribute guests evenly across tables while keeping groups together.

Don't want to manually place every guest? WedSites can automatically distribute guests across your tables when you set up your seating chart.

Plan requirement: Pro plan

How to auto-assign

Auto-assignment happens when you first set up your seating chart or reset it:

  1. Go to Planner > Seating
  2. Click Reset tables (the rotate icon)
  3. Enter the number of tables you plan to have
  4. Click Continue
  5. WedSites creates your tables and distributes guests across them automatically

If this is your first time using seating, you'll be taken to this setup screen automatically.

How it works

The auto-assign algorithm:
- Distributes confirmed guests across tables
- Sorts guests by group, household, and side before distributing, so group members tend to end up at the same table
- Fills tables evenly

Unconfirmed guests are not auto-assigned. They appear in the unassigned list for you to place manually once they confirm.

Important: resetting clears existing assignments

Using the reset flow removes all existing tables and guest assignments and starts fresh. Only use this if you want to rebuild your seating chart from scratch.

After auto-assigning

You'll probably want to fine-tune the results. The automatic assignment gives you a starting point, and you can move individual guests around to get the perfect arrangement.

You can also skip the auto-assignment step and create a single empty table to start placing guests manually.

Tips

Use it as a starting point. Auto-assign saves time, but you'll almost certainly want to make adjustments.

Set up groups first. The algorithm sorts by group before distributing, so guests in the same group are more likely to end up at the same table.

Review carefully. Make sure no awkward combinations ended up at the same table.
