Editing a sidebar section

Group sections together in a sidebar layout to create different visual structures and content arrangements on your pages.

Sidebar sections let you group other sections together in a sidebar layout. This creates a different visual structure for your content.

What you can do with sidebar sections

Create a sidebar layout on your page.

Group sections together in a distinct area.

Change up your page structure from the standard full-width layout.

Organize related content in a sidebar format.

Adding a sidebar section

  1. Go to Site in your main navigation
  2. Click Add a new section
  3. Choose Sidebar from the list
  4. Click Save changes

How sidebars work

Sidebar sections are containers. You add other sections inside them to create the sidebar content.

The exact behavior depends on your theme, but generally:

Main content flows in the larger area.

Sidebar content appears in a narrower column beside or around the main content.

Sections inside the sidebar display differently than full-width sections.

What goes in a sidebar?

Common sidebar content:

Quick links
Contact info
Important dates
At-a-glance details
Navigation
Highlights

Think of sidebars as supporting content that complements your main page content.

Adding sections to your sidebar

After creating a sidebar section:

  1. Add new sections as you normally would
  2. Some themes let you assign sections to the sidebar specifically
  3. Or sections immediately following the sidebar might automatically flow into it

This depends on your theme design. Experiment to see how your theme handles sidebars.

Tips for using sidebars

Keep it simple. Sidebars work best with concise content, not long paragraphs.

Use for navigation. Lists of links or quick access to other pages.

Highlight key info. Dates, times, locations at a glance.

Don't overcrowd. Too much in a sidebar makes it overwhelming.

Test on mobile. Sidebars often stack vertically on phones. Make sure that still looks good.

When to use sidebars

Long pages. Sidebars help organize content on pages with lots of info.

Info-heavy sites. When you have many details to share.

Multi-section pages. To create visual distinction between content types.

Alternative layouts. When you want something different from the standard full-width look.

Editing an existing sidebar

  1. Go to Site in your main navigation
  2. Click on the sidebar section
  3. Make any changes (though sidebars themselves don't have many editable fields)
  4. Click Save changes

Most of the work is in the sections you add to or around the sidebar, not the sidebar itself.

Removing a sidebar

To remove a sidebar section entirely:

  1. Remove or move any sections that are inside the sidebar
  2. Delete the sidebar section itself

See our article on deleting a section for more details.

Theme compatibility

Not all themes support sidebars the same way. Some themes:

Have dedicated sidebar areas. You assign sections specifically to the sidebar.

Auto-create sidebars. Based on section types or order.

Don't support sidebars. Sidebar sections might not do anything special.

Check your theme's documentation or experiment to see how sidebars work with your theme.

Customizing sidebar sections

You can also customize:

Space above and below: Adjust padding around the sidebar area.

Colors: Sidebar background or styling.

Privacy: Make the sidebar visible to everyone or just certain guests.

Page assignment: Which page the sidebar appears on.

These options are in the section editor.

Sidebars add layout flexibility to your wedding website. Use them to create more interesting page structures when the standard layout isn't quite right!
