Assigning guest to language

Learn how to assign a preferred language to each guest so they receive ecards and communications in the language they're most comfortable with (Pro plan feature).

If your wedding has guests who speak different languages, you can assign a preferred language to each guest. This determines which language version of your ecards and communications they'll receive.

Plan requirement: Pro plan (multiple languages are a Pro feature)

How to assign a language

  1. Go to Guests in your main navigation
  2. Click on the guest
  3. In the Details tab, find the Preferred language dropdown
  4. Select the language
  5. Click Save guest

You'll only see the language dropdown if you've added at least one additional language in your settings.

What it affects

When you assign a language to a guest, they'll receive:

  • Save the date ecards in that language
  • Invitation ecards in that language
  • Email communications in that language

Their RSVP experience and any guest-facing content will also display in their preferred language when possible.

Changing preferred language via ?lang parameter

A guest's preferred language can also change when they click a link with the ?lang= parameter. For example, if a guest opens yourwedding.wedsites.com?lang=fr, their preferred language will automatically update to French. This applies to website links, ecard links, and RSVP links.

This is useful for directing guests to a specific language version, but keep in mind that it permanently changes their language preference.

Default language

If you don't assign a language, the guest will receive everything in your website's default language.

Setting up languages

Before you can assign languages to guests, you need to add languages to your wedding. Head to Settings > Languages to add new languages. Check out our article on working with multiple languages for the full setup guide.

Showing the language column

If you want to see each guest's preferred language in your guest list, you can turn on the language column. Go to Guest settings and check the Preferred language box.

Tips

Set languages early. If you know a guest speaks a different language, assign it before you start sending ecards. That way they'll get the right version automatically.

Default is fine for most guests. You only need to change this for guests who should receive communications in a language other than your default.

Testing language display. If you send a test email and click the link, you may see the wrong language. This happens because you're logged into your account, so the system sees you as the owner rather than the guest. To test correctly, open the link in a private/incognito window, a different browser, or a different device. See "Why is the wrong language showing when I test" for more details.
