How do I handle alternate names or nicknames?
Help guests find themselves when they RSVP using different name variations.
Plan requirement: Standard or Pro plan
Short answer: Add alternate names or nicknames to a guest's profile so they can find themselves using either their formal name or nickname.
The problem
Guests might search for themselves using:
- A nickname (Bill vs William)
- A shortened name (Liz vs Elizabeth)
- A different spelling (Katy vs Katie)
- A maiden name or different last name
If the name doesn't match exactly, they'll get a "can't find you" error.
Adding alternate names
- Go to Guests
- Find and click on the guest
- Look for Alternate Names or Also Known As
- Add their nickname or alternate spelling
- Save changes
Common examples
| Formal Name | Add These Alternates |
|---|---|
| William | Bill, Will, Billy |
| Elizabeth | Liz, Beth, Lizzy |
| Robert | Bob, Rob, Bobby |
| Katherine | Kate, Katie, Kathy |
| Michael | Mike, Mikey |
| Jennifer | Jen, Jenny |
For married vs maiden names
If a guest might search by maiden name:
- Add their maiden name as an alternate
- Or include both: "Jane Smith (née Jones)"
Cultural considerations
For guests with:
- Multiple family names
- Different name orders (family name first)
- Transliterated names from other languages
- Titles they commonly use
Add the variations they might type.
When guests still can't find themselves
If alternates don't solve it:
- Check for extra spaces or punctuation
- Verify exact spelling in your system
- Consider enabling RSVP by email as backup
- Provide them their name exactly as listed
Tips
- Think about how each guest refers to themselves
- Ask close family about nicknames for older relatives
- Add alternates before sending invitations
- Test the RSVP lookup with common variations
